Double podium for Cherry CHEUNG and Samuel HSIEH at Pingtan

Teamwork Motorsport had a fantastic weekend at the third round of the 2023 Geely Super Cup Pro series at the Pingtan Street Circuit, with Cherry CHEUNG and co-driver Samuel HSIEH finishing on the podium in both races.

Qualifying

It was a strong start straight away from qualifying, with HSIEH and CHEUNG putting their #10 car second on the grid for the race, while the #21 of LIU Xiaohua had set the fastest time of all, but unfortunately he’d be forced to start from the back of the grid due to a technical issue in the session.

Race 1

HSIEH took the reins of the #10 car at the start of the race, and after a chaotic start in which he dropped to fourth, Samuel was soon fighting his way back up the order, and was already back to second place before the end of the opening lap.

Samuel then dived down the inside of the race leader at Turn 1 and took over, though he was hit in the rear at the corner exit which caused his rear bumper to come loose.

Samuel fell to second place at the end of the following lap, but still had good pace and was keeping the cars behind at bay.

By the half-way point of the race, LIU had driven all the way up into the top ten in the #21 car and was continuing to make fantastic progress from the back of the grid.

Following the pit stop cycle, Cherry CHEUNG took over the #10 and the car was still in second. The last part of the race was heavily disrupted, with two safety car interventions followed by a red flag after a car ended up on its roof.

The race wasn’t restarted, leaving CHEUNG and HSIEH to finish in a brilliant second place, with LIU having recovered all the way to eighth.

Race 2

CHEUNG started the #10 car for Race 2 and was involved in a fantastic scrape during the first laps of the race, battling hard with the #06 car. The #06 briefly got ahead before Cherry, but she was able to dive back past on the following lap to retake the position.

It was now LIU’s turn to try and pass the #06, and he tried to make a move at Turn 1 with 30 minutes left in the race but the two cars came together. LIU dropped back to seventh place with damage, and eventually had to retire from the race.

Cherry was safely in second when the pit stops began and she handed the car over to Samuel.

The race was soon suspended behind the safety car and then red-flagged following an incident, after which the #10 car was now in fifth position.

With an eight-minute sprint race following the red flag, Samuel was on a mission, charging past two cars to claim the final podium position spot before the chequered flag, claiming a second consecutive podium for himself and Cherry.

While it was a mixed weekend overall for the team, with many dramas and challenges mainly befalling the #21 car, it was a sensational weekend for the team behind the #10 car of of Cherry and Samuel, with the drivers putting on two sterling drives to finish on the podium in two races of the highly-competitive Geely Super Cup Pro series.
