At the opening of the 2023 Asia Pacific Championship – Hong Kong Touring Car Race, the GIC Guangdong International Circuit hosted an intense second round of the Macau Touring Car Series August 19-20.
Teamwork Motorsport’s Paul POON took the wheel of his Lynk & Co 03 TCR and in a pair of thrilling races secured the runner-up spot in Race 4.
Qualifying took place in scorching conditions on Saturday afternoon, with an outside temperature of 32°C. The team’s engineers faced a formidable challenge as the weather alternated between blazing sunshine and pouring rain. However, Paul Poon set an impressive time of 1:22.211 on his sixth lap, setting the fastest lap of the entire field, which gave him pole position for Race 3.
In Sunday morning’s race, Paul POON kept the lead from pole and quickly pulled away from his competitors. However, on lap six the yellow flags were out following an incident on-track, with the safety car deployed two laps later.
After three laps, the safety car came in and the race resumed. POON maintained a commanding lead up until lap 13, when a mechanical issue forced him to return to the pits, sadly retiring from the race.
Based on the results of the first race, POON started from 12th place for Race 4. Poon had an incredible start, overtaking three rivals on the first lap and continued to chase down his rivals, and continued to carve his way through the pack.
POON made his final pass on lap 11, grabbing second place in a move at Turn 1, securing the second spot on the podium in a challenging race.
With two rounds of the championship now complete, Paul POON has put on some incredible performances in all four races.
