Teamwork Motorsport travelled to Korea International Circuit at the weekend (9-10 July) expecting a strong showing in the SINOPEC LUBRICANTS China Touring Car (CTCC) race at Yeongam, but a string of incidents made it a difficult weekend for the team.
Practice proved to be a mixed affair with Alex Hui running consistently in the top three in his #13 Citroen, but Sunny Wong was left sidelined from the action after an engine issue struck the #12 entry.
Hui carried the momentum into qualifying, just missing out on the top slot by two tenths of a second from British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) regular, Adam Morgan, but engine problems continued for Wong and he was duly forced to start the race from the back of the field.
Hui’s start to the first race set the scene for what would be a tough weekend for Teamwork Motorsport, as the Chinese racer made a strong start from second on the grid, only to be struck from behind at the first turn.
Hui dropped to the midfield as a result but was able to continue and finished in seventh position, while Wong’s engine issues continued and hampered his race pace.
Aiming to put the disappointing first race behind him, Hui duly lined up second once again, quickly slotting in behind the leader with race one rival Morgan close behind. Sadly it wasn’t to last because, following a short, but intense battle, a collision at the end of the second lap resulted in retirement.
Wong was able to nurse his Citroen from the back of the grid to finish in ninth position and the team will now regroup during the summer break before returning to action at the Guangdong International Circuit, China on 28 August.
